Position:  Coordinator of Assessment and Diversity Issues

Dear Dr. _______________,

My name is Erica Lee, and I am a fourth-year student at the University of Georgia studying Human Development and Family Science.  My experiences have given me a unique and passionate perspective of campus life that would serve you well if I was chosen as the Coordinator of Assessment and Diversity at the Office of Institutional Diversity.
I currently serve as a resident assistant in Creswell Hall, a first-year residence hall.  Creswell is home to over 900 students each with their own story, culture, and identity.  I work with these students every day.  For first-years, exposing themselves to diverse experiences and cultures are crucial learning moments to creating respectful citizens, as a simple comment may help reconstruct their cognitive processes.

I combine this levelheadedness with a passion for social justice and inclusivity.  Being a resident assistant has given me many opportunities to expose first-year students and residents to the reality of marginalized identities.  I have created programs in the past that joined student groups, faculty, and residents to discuss gender expression, gender roles, and sexuality.  This summer, served as the Diversity and Inclusion intern for Family Connection to support marginalized populations.  This came to life in EqualSpeech, a week-long training program about protected classes and allyship, with room for participants to grow and evolve the training, that I would love the chance to bring to the University.

I am also passionate about congruencey with accepted statements of diversity.  For example, I began a petition to change the College of Family and Consumer Science’s gonfalon, a banner flown at graduation to represent the college, from a heteronormative image to an inclusive one, an icon called the Betty Lamp.

We received over 100 signatures within 48 hours.

It would be my extreme privilege to bring my passion and drive to the Office of Institutional Diversity.  I appreciate your efforts to create a safer and happier future, and I am honored by your time and your consideration.

All the best,

Erica Lee
